Hardy Signs is one of the leading exhibition display suppliers in the exhibition industry. We specialise in creating custom exhibition displays that will make your products stand out at exhibitions, trade shows, and other business events. Then you can attract more customer leads and other business interests to your company and brand.

A custom exhibition display will showcase your products in a fun and creative way. We can use a wide variety of graphic materials to make your exhibition displays reflect your specific promotions and messaging, such as polyester, PVC, and LED screens. Whatever it takes, we can deliver.

Here are the top four custom exhibition displays we can create for our clients:

1) Pop-Up Displays

Pop-up displays are easy to transport to different events because they come with a protective bag with wheels on the bottom. So you can practically set them up anywhere within a matter of minutes.

We have many custom pop-up display options, such as magnetic pop-ups, illuminating pop-ups, and fabric pop-ups. No matter where you put these pop-ups, they will stand out amid the crowds around them. The pop-ups are even adjustable so that you can make them taller if necessary.

2) Roller Banners

Roller banners are the easiest to transport from one event to another because they roll up into a base. Meanwhile, the high-definition graphics and colours on the banners are not scuffed or creased after you roll them up.

Hardy Signs can create a custom roller banner with a width of between 600mm and 3,000mm. Roller banners are perfect for exhibition stands in any environment, such as offices, retail outlets, and trade shows.

3) Modular Stands

Modular stands are one of the most customisable exhibition stands in terms of size because you can reconfigure them into different styles and shapes. Their flexibility and appeal allow you to use them in virtually any environment, whether there is a lot of space or limited space. It all depends on the size of your booth or some other setting where you’re promoting your products.

4) Freestanding Digital Displays

Freestanding digital displays offer unlimited visual customisation because you can showcase any imagery you would like on them. They are most commonly used in boardrooms and reception areas for guests and clients to see. But they can also be highly effective to use at trade shows as well.

Our freestanding digital displays come equipped with an IPS panel, touchscreen technology, built-in Wi-Fi, LED backlighting, and an ultra-slim and lightweight screen. You can put videos, images, advertising, or any other digital content that you want on it.

Colours are a significant factor in creating memorable brand logos and advertisements. Everything from your promotions to the products you sell should bear the same two or three colours. That way, people can look at your products and promotions and immediately associate your brand with them.

There are many great examples of brand colours matched across several retail environments. Colours identify the brand and represent the products they have to sell. Therefore, you must learn to consistently use the same brand colours on the interior and exterior of all relevant retail environments and promotions.

Here are some examples of where you should be using your brand colours:

Customers should see your retail colour scheme on everything, including the product packaging, plastic bags, shipping boxes, etc. Then it becomes a constant reminder of your shop whenever people encounter your retail brand colours.

Tips for Matching Brand Colours

Typical retail environments consist of the outside, entry points, product aisles, points of sale, bathrooms, exits, website, and customer service desks. Properly using colours in each area is key to driving your customers to your shop and then out of the shop with a purchased product. But you must match the colours to stay consistent with your messaging.

Here are three tips for matching brand colours across retail environments.

1) How to Pick Colours for Your Brand

Internet marketers and branding strategists have various colour theories regarding how specific colours make people react or respond. The colours you choose should match the feel of your brand’s personality and the products it sells.

For example, darker colours like black are often associated with luxury shops and items. Most jewellery shops like to use black in their signage because it emits a feeling of power and strength. On the other hand, cooler colours like green and blue are more associated with environmental friendliness and anything that has to do with nature or the environment.

Now let’s say you run a discount retail shop selling items at a reduced cost. In this scenario, the best colours for your signage are warmer colours like yellow, red, and orange. They make people feel more optimistic and energetic to spend money on something, especially if it’s cheap.Enquire nowBrochure

2) Use the Same Hex Colour Code

When we talk about “matching brand colours,” it means ensuring you’re using the same hex colours for your scheme on every sign. If you’re not familiar with the term “hex colour” it refers to how much of a particular colour to show.

Hex colours have values represented as numbers ranging from 0 to 255. Each value represents a certain amount of red, green, and blue. Combining various colour values creates a unique hex colour that can only be duplicated with the same hex colour code.

Now, concerning matching brand colours across different retail environments, you must ensure you stay consistent with the hex colours of your brand’s colour scheme. Don’t assume that solid colours like yellow, red, and blue are the same everywhere.

Their unique hex colour codes represent different tones and shades of these colours. So if you don’t duplicate the colour code on your signage precisely, people will notice different shades of your colour scheme.

As a result, your colour scheme won’t have the same effect on people. Your signage will come across as coming from a different company because the colour tones are not exact. For this reason, you need to write down the hex colour code of your brand’s colour scheme after deciding on which colours to use for it.

3) Screen Your Competitors’ Brand Colours

Another reason why original hex colour codes are important is to avoid using the same colour schemes as your competitors. After all, if every retail business owner used the same solid colour combinations for their colour schemes, you would easily see numerous crossovers between various retail brands in the industry.

It is crucial to ensure you’re using an original hex colour code with no two-colour value combinations the same as another retail company’s colours. Otherwise, your customers might confuse another retail shop with your shop. Then you would either lose business to the other shop or end up with a damaged reputation based on the actions of that other shop.

So, if you see numerous retail brands with red and white colours, for instance, it doesn’t mean you cannot use red and white colours for your scheme. However, it would help if you used a different colour value or tone for each colour to differentiate yourself from the competition, which uses similar colours for their schemes.

How many times have you got lost in a hospital? How many times have you parked in the wrong area or asked for directions? According to a 2018 report from Deloitte, 87% of patients had asked for guidance when visiting a medical facility. The report states that during 2016-2017, 8 million appointments were missed, leading to losses of several hundred million pounds.

Hospitals and doctors’ surgeries across the United Kingdom are used daily. Most of these places are large buildings, and therefore wayfinding systems are needed to help visitors, patients, employees, and contractors to find their way inside and outside the premises.

From digital touchscreen displays to vinyl graphics, in this blog, we will be looking at how these solutions are vital and which ones are best for their location. Our Main BrochureWayfinding SignageAccording to an NHS UK document, ‘’Wayfinding’’ covers all to do with how people find their way in different environments. In the context of the NHS, it is not just a term referred to as signage. For example, the Disability Discrimination Act, which came into force in 2004, had significant implications for healthcare facilities. Their sites must allow access to all areas and remove all barriers for disabled people. They are also required to provide accessible information aids such as large-print written directions, among other elements, to enable people who are deaf to lip-read.

> There are three main factors that affect wayfinding.

1 – People factors

The ability and knowledge of the person making a journey to find their way. Main people factors are emotional state, attitude, choice of mode of transport, ability to understand the language used on signs, mobility, ability to read and hear.

2 – Environmental factors

Environment impacts the journey to the medical facility, which affects how easy people find it to make appropriate decisions.  The main environmental factors are the complexity of the site, routes and interiors of the buildings, recognisability of the venue, identifiability of the site entrance from all directions, visibility of the entrance and prominent landmarks for people to notice.

3 – Information factors

People look out for several touchpoints to help them find their way. The clarity, accuracy and positioning of wayfinding signs will vary from hospital to hospital and even from department to department. There are four types of information points: Pre-visit information, En-route information, On-site information and Locational information.

Some signs that would enable you to achieve an efficient wayfinding directorate:

Digital Signage

This is one of the most popular solutions in hospitals and surgeries as the different options can help in various areas. For example, you can use digital screens in the waiting room to communicate important information such as patients’ names, doctor’s room numbers, names, etc.

“According to ScreenCloud, 75% of patients viewing a digital sign in a hospital could recall at least one message displayed. Overall, this means that visitors and patients will be exposed to initiatives in the healthcare facility. Therefore, it has a high potential for advertising opportunities and may help defer time-consuming questions from nursing staff.”

Window Graphics

This solution enables you to add your branding, opening and closing hours and contact details to your windows. They are helpful to passers-by both when you are open and closed. Local residents could walk by, take a picture of your details or write them down to contact when you are open.

A range of frosted and solar films are available to reduce glare or to offer increased privacy. You can use this solution for small panels or wrap the whole window; that’s entirely up to you. These can be as colourful or decorative as you want them to be. Our large format printing capabilities enable us to produce high-resolution graphics.

Physical Solutions

Physical Solutions are vital in helping people locate their destination or route. They make over 90% of the wayfinding system. These solutions include totems, hanging signs, post and panel, wall graphics and more. We will look at these solutions separately below.

Totems and Post and Panel Signs

They can usually be found at the front of a healthcare facility, around the main entrance or at a strategical point outside the premises to direct the drivers. They typically integrate a mix between branding and wayfinding and are one of the most popular signs that you would expect to find in every major healthcare facility.

Both solutions are made of durable sign systems and can be customised with digital print and bespoke shapes and are built to resist all types of weather conditions.

Based on NHS guidelines, we consider the environment and background colour, because the environment in which the sign is placed affects noticeability and legibility. The background colour used on signs should contrast with the environment to ensure signage is prominent. When the contrast isn’t sufficient, we place a contrasting border around the signs.

Suspended Ceiling Signs

Can be found everywhere in healthcare facilities and require a larger typeface than signs positioned at eye level. NHS guidelines recommend that the height for a suspended sign should be at just over 2 metres. Hanging signs are a crucial part of the wayfinding directorate and ensuring that they are designed and positioned in the right way is essential.

Wall Graphics

Whether you use giant arrows to point to a specific direction or show what floor people are on, wall graphics provide a great way of using wayfinding signage. Wall graphics are interchangeable; they can be easily removed or rebranded if plans change in the future.

They are designed for many different purposes. For example, for a children’s ward, using bright colours and cartoon characters that advise on where to go is likely to put children at ease.

Floor Graphics

There are designed to be walked on and are placed in high footfall areas. They were one of the most searched terms on the internet when the pandemic Covid-19 started as they acted as wayfinding, queue management and health and safety solutions.

We recently donated floor graphics to the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton. They showed the message ‘Hands, Face, Space’ to remind everyone to follow the safety guidelines in place.

Using our award-winning creative and installation teams and environmentally friendly printers, we can manage your project from the beginning to the end. Anti-slip laminate could also be used for external floor graphics.

Conclusion

Our signs can be manufactured to be fully interchangeable to allow maximum flexibility and can be located on the ground, on a wall or suspended above to suit the location and aim. We also offer illuminated wayfinding options to maximise prominence, visibility, and identifiability.

Healthcare facilities are critical in society and strict NHS guidelines require continuous optimisation of the signage provision to guarantee accessibility and up to date information. Our team have been working with the NHS for over 20 years and we are up to date with the latest brand guidelines.

Q: What is your design process from start to finish?

A – James:

The starting point is where we touch base with the clients. For example, an enquiry comes through the website and marketing sends it to us. We approach the customer via email or call them and ask all the relevant questions, e.g., dimensions, brand guidelines, and a particular design in mind. As soon as the quote gets the green light, we move forward with the project. The project could be anything from a small plaque for a house to a nationwide rebrand that involves various signs.

A – Scott:

To start, we create an initial concept/design and send this to the client. Once they have responded with their feedback (if required), we will develop this and work with the client to get the approval. Once approved by the client, the design is finalised and moved into the relevant folder. The production team then uses this to work. Throughout this process, we make checks to pick up any potential errors.

A – Kyle:

My process starts with a job sheet – which is like a project brief to follow. The job sheet includes all the specifications and is also beneficial to the workshop team.Contact UsView our Brochure

Q: What is the most important element to remember when designing?

A – James:

Every job is different, so what is essential for one project may be entirely irrelevant to the next. If a company has got strict brand guidelines, we ensure to stick to those at all times. Before I send any job off, I usually print it out and go through it to ensure there are no spelling errors, missed words or punctuation. Depending on the job’s size, I also ask one of my colleagues to proofread – as two pairs of eyes are always better than one.

A – Scott:

The main thing I make sure to remember is continually proof the visuals, making sure I’m picking up any potential errors. Avoiding mistakes is extremely important during the design process.

A – Kyle:

We create thousands of designs at Hardy Signs every year; no two jobs are alike. When I am designing, I make sure the sizes are equal, proofread the spelling, etc. When I’m driving to and from work, I love looking at the signage around, especially vehicle graphics and thinking about what I would do differently or what I like about their design. This process helps me broaden my creative skillset.

Q: What is a project you are most proud of and why?

A – James:

A lot of the jobs I work with are for Müller UK. I like the booklets I create for them; they take quite a lot of time to design and quality-check but undoubtedly very aesthetically pleasing.

A – Scott:

My favourite was probably Bretby Business Park. It was a bit stressful, but I enjoyed getting involved with the photography and editing all of the imagery in Photoshop. They eventually formed Large Format Printed Hoarding Signage, and it was great to see the finished article.

A – Kyle:

I don’t have a specific job that was my favourite as I’m pretty proud of all the jobs I’ve done. There have been a few projects I’ve completed or assisted with over my time here that I’ve enjoyed. We’ve done that many that I can’t pinpoint the one.

Q: Is there anything a client needs to think about when enquiring about signage?

A – James:

Customers need to think about the colours, materials and sizes because different signs will require different elements. For example, you would need ACM (Aluminium Composite Material) for external signage, whereas internal signs would require a material like Foamex. Even when it comes to Wall Graphics, there is a vast range to choose from – you can get pastable wallpaper, or vinyl is another option. It’s up to us to make sure we are using the suitable material, so it’s always good to double-check and explain the different options.

A – Scott:

They need to consider the best material for the location of the signs. If it’s an external sign, the material will need to be durable and weather-resistant so that it is long-lasting. Regarding the design, keeping a safe area around the internal edges and ensuring both the sign/text size is suitable for the requirements. For example, with a large advertising sign, the text would still need to be legible at a distance.

A – Kyle:

Most of our clients think about the sizes and materials beforehand. When they contact us, they have a good idea about what they want it to look like; as designers, it is our job to match that. Depending on the job, we may send the client the design they require and maybe 1 or 2 different versions. This way, the customer has got the option to decide which they prefer and any elements they want to combine. Each process acts as a step for the next; therefore, a singular error can create a domino effect. The design may seem a small part, but it is the most crucial part in reality. In this stage, the team doesn’t just look at the design itself but also measurements and materials. They need to work out the availability of the production team to be able to advise the customer on a delivery/instalment date. Without all of this, there is room for error, and we must make sure design for manufacturing is a part of the overall process.Whether working with traditional signage, digital signage, or an online presence – our team calls on years of experience, skills, and knowledge to ensure that the design communicates your message effectively. We’ll encourage you to work closely with the design team to develop your ideas, introduce new concepts and ultimately create the finished article that you’ll be proud of in representing your organisation.About the company: Hardy Signs is a professional and digital signage company that designs, manufactures and installs bespoke signage products to a wide range of business sectors in the United Kingdom. or signage

This month, Hardy Signs marks 29 years in business — a milestone that reflects nearly three decades of growth, investment, and long-term partnerships across the UK and beyond.

Founded in 1993 by Nik Hardy, the business has grown from a small operation serving local customers in Burton-on-Trent into a nationally recognised signage supplier working across a wide range of sectors. Today, Hardy Signs supports organisations with the design, manufacture, and installation of bespoke signage solutions, including branded environments and digital signage, as well as wayfinding, health and safety, and large-scale rollout projects.

For our team, this anniversary is not just about longevity. It is about the relationships, projects, and progress that have shaped Hardy Signs into the business it is today.

From Local Beginnings to National Delivery

Hardy Signs began in a home garage before moving into its first rented unit in 1995. In the early years, much of the company’s work focused on hand-painted signs and vehicle graphics, particularly for breweries and pubs in and around Burton-on-Trent.

As the business grew, so did the scale and complexity of the work. Over time, Hardy Signs expanded into larger premises, broadened its service offering, and began working with regional, national, and international organisations across multiple industries.

That growth eventually led to the move to Hardy Place in 2011, which remains the company’s headquarters today and the base for its design, manufacturing, and project delivery operations.

Supporting Organisations Across the UK

Now in its 29th year, Hardy Signs has delivered more than 1,200,000 signs for customers across the UK and beyond.

Recent projects have included work for a broad mix of organisations, including major commercial brands, public sector bodies, and national events. During this period, the company has supplied signage for hundreds of businesses and organisations, including work connected to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, alongside projects for well-known names such as Amazon UK, Alstom, Bet365, Holland & Barrett, and We Buy Any Car.

This breadth of experience is one of the reasons Hardy Signs continues to work across multiple sectors, helping clients who need a signage partner that can combine design quality, practical delivery, and dependable project support.

Investing in Growth, People and Capability

A major part of the Hardy Signs story has been continuous investment — not only in equipment and facilities, but in people and long-term capability.

Over the years, the company has invested heavily in machinery, manufacturing processes, and ways of working that support both quality and efficiency. More recently, that has included a stronger focus on sustainable production, recycling, and a longer-term environmental vision for the future.

At the same time, Hardy Signs has continued to invest in training and workforce development. Building in-house knowledge and supporting young professionals has remained an important part of the company’s approach, helping to strengthen skills across the business and support the next generation entering the industry.

For many customers, that investment is reflected in the quality, consistency, and reliability of the work delivered.

Recognition for Quality and Service

Over the last decade, Hardy Signs has also received recognition through several business and manufacturing awards.

The company was named Manufacturer of the Year in 2019 and 2020 and was later recognised as a finalist for Excellence in Manufacturing in both 2021 and 2022. These achievements reflect not only the quality of the company’s manufacturing output, but also the wider standards of customer service, teamwork, and operational delivery behind each project.

For customers, this matters because choosing a signage supplier is about more than product alone. It is about confidence in the process, the people, and the outcome.

Milestones That Shaped the Business

Over the last decade, Hardy Signs has reached several important milestones that reflect its growth as a business and its connection to the wider community.

These include:

  • launching the Resuscitation Grab Bag Appeal in support of Burton Hospital, raising £10,000
  • establishing the Signs and Print Academy in partnership with Burton and South Derbyshire College to help train new talent in the sign and print industry
  • installing 200 solar panels at Hardy Place as part of continued investment in sustainability
  • completing international installation work in Brussels, Belgium
  • delivering a digital signage project in California, USA

Together, these milestones reflect the company’s ambition to keep moving forward while staying rooted in the values that helped build the business in the first place.

What 29 Years Means for Customers

For marketing managers, facilities managers, estates teams, and commercial decision-makers, experience matters.

Choosing the right signage partner is not just about finding someone who can produce a sign. It is about working with a business that understands design, manufacturing, installation, project coordination, compliance, and the practical realities of delivering signage across different sites and sectors.

After 29 years in business, Hardy Signs continues to support clients who need exactly that: a partner capable of delivering quality signage solutions reliably, professionally, and at scale.

Looking Ahead

As Hardy Signs enters its 29th year, the focus remains on building for the future — investing in people, improving sustainability, and continuing to deliver signage solutions that help organisations present themselves clearly and professionally.

From local beginnings to national delivery, the company’s growth has been shaped by long-term relationships, a commitment to quality, and a willingness to keep evolving with the needs of customers.

We would like to thank our customers, partners, and team members who have been part of that journey so far.

Derby public relations agency, Penguin PR has moved into a new office at Oaklands, in Duffield Road. The company, which is one of the fastest-growing agencies in the city, helps its clients share their news online, on-air and in print.

The company, which has also opened an office in Chesterfield, needed more room for its expanding team and felt a more central location would enable them to access and host clients more easily.

For this project, Penguin PR provided the design concept in a bid to bring the blank walls to life and Hardy Signs’ internal design team created the finished concept before the signage was created by the workshop team. The project took 16 working days from enquiry to manufacturing and installation.

The signage produced and then installed included:1. 1800x1000mm 5mm clear acrylic with flame polished edges, printed graphics and 25mm silver standoffs.

2. 2 x printed quotes on high tack vinyl with matt laminate.Nik Hardy, managing director at Hardy Signs, said: “We’re really pleased that Penguin PR has entrusted us for their office signage project. They are a great company in our region, and support the same organisations as Hardy Signs; East Midlands Chambers of Commerce, Marketing Derby and so on. We look forward to other projects in the future.”

Sarah Newton, director at Penguin PR, added: “Our new offices mark a new chapter in business for Penguin PR. We have experienced unprecedented business growth over the last two years and our customers have seen increased demand and record turnover.

“We have achieved these results on behalf of our customers through well-written, engaging stories that build reputation, award submissions, media presence and more. We hope to offer our services to other excellent organisations in the UK.

“We would like to thank Hardy signs for our lovely signs – we are absolutely delighted with them. Their installation team were also great, so it was an all-round brilliant service.”
