A new memorial garden at the Queen’s Hospital in Burton, Burton Hospitals, featuring the work of Hardy Signs, has been unveiled by HRH The Duke of Gloucester on his recent visit to the town. 

Prince Richard was at the hospital on Tuesday, July 25th to open the garden named ‘Another Chance to Fly’ and built in memory of patients who made the selfless decision to donate their organs after their death.

As part of the larger project, Hardy Signs were tasked with creating a series of ‘bird logos’ from polished steel that appear to be flying around the walls of the garden. In addition, the Duke unveiled a commemorative plaque, created by Hardy Signs, marking the event and remembering the brave patients who gave others a second chance at life.

The garden was designed by illustration company H+H, which created the design to create a calm and positive feeling. Hannah Alice, one of the designers for the project, said: “The courtyard space presented the opportunity to work with the existing architecture of the site. We decided we wanted to focus on the positive impact of organ donation and the future it gives to recipients. “Each metal bird has an etched metal effect which reflects different light from different angles, therefore changing each time the site is visited.”

Deb Price, Associate Director of the Medical Directors Office at Queens Hospital added “We’re delighted with the finished memorial garden and in particular the metal birds feature. Hardy Signs interpreted the design from H+H perfectly and the results are superb… a fitting tribute”.

The new memorial garden can be accessed through the main entrance of the hospital and is open to anybody who wants to visit and remember those who have given their organs to help someone else.
